First Grade Project: Plants and Animals of Various Ecosystems

Students are assigned a specific plant or animal of their class' chosen ecosystem.
Students research their topic and find a photo of it with classroom teacher.
Literacy specialist visits each classroom helping students "become their plant or animal" by describing in first person and using descriptive words.


In tech class, students use StoryKit app to draw plant/animal.
Take screenshot of drawing.

On iPads, students download Pages template posted on Tech@Lincoln.
Students replace template text and image with their own work.
Students use Camera app to take self-portrait photo & insert into Pages.

Students (with teacher help) share their Pages document via iWork.com. [Have to enter teacher's iWork.com credentials on each iPad.]
Teacher downloads each student Pages file and copies them into one Pages file.
Teachers "shares" the Pages file as ePub file, and posts to Tech@Lincoln.

Students download their class' ePub file and open it in iBooks app.
